Learn How To Draw A Hedgehog In Colour Pencils

Would you like to learn how to draw the sweet little hedgehog and give it a go yourself?

Are you looking to develop your colour pencil skills to create realistic animal drawings?

Would you like to learn how to use a Slice Cutter to make your life easier to create hair texture?

Then this is the project for you!

Join me and learn how to draw a hedgehog in colour pencils through almost 14 hours of real time videos. These are broken down into manageable size chunks to enable you to draw along with me and learn all the techniques that I used in this project.

I like to talk through not only what I am doing but why I'm doing it in real time, so you can learn through my thought processes as well as how to fix mistakes as they occur. In this one you will learn how to build up layers of pencil, how to use a Slice Cutter to create the hairs as well as my waxy pencil technique for creating those spines. Learn how to choose and layer colours as well as create different textures such as the shiny side of some of the leaves.

I like to teach you all these things so that you can take them away with you and apply them in your own drawings.

Please note that whilst reference photos, material lists and outlines are downloadable, videos are available to view online. They are not downloadable due to the sheer size of the files.

What Materials Do I Need?

Surface - For this tutorial, I used Hahnemhüle Nostalgie paper. If you do not have any, then do not worry, feel free to use something similar - it is a fairly smooth white paper with just a slight texture.

Pencils - I used mostly Caran D'ache Luminance pencils with a couple of Derwent Lightfast and Faber Castell Polychromos.

You can find a full list of colours in the material list below.

If you have different brands of pencils or you don't have the exact same colours that I have used, then just use something similar. The only pencils that I would recommend you use are a waxy Buff Titanium and White such as the Caran D'ache Luminance for the waxy resist method I will be teaching you. For example the Polychromos are too hard and not waxy enough for this method to work well.

Other Tools - You will need a Slice Cutter, Tombow Mono Eraser and some Putty Rubber or White Tac
